Android Hub App won't work if Venstar T1800 is in auto mode or program mode

I have Hub 2 and use a Samsung Galaxy S5 with the Android Hub App. I have two Tstats in my home each one acts the same way. I must put the Tstat in the manual mode for either heat or cool to be able to change the temperature. Is this normal. If it is I can live with it. I live in the Phoenix area and take several trips during the summer. I want to be able to dial up the cooling remotely early in the morning on the day that I am traveling back home. If the tstats are in the auto or program mode and I link up with my cell phone app., the tstats will automatically change the temp to 73 degrees without me making any change. If I try to change the temperature at that point it tells me it cannot make any changes. It is like something is pre-programed to do that. My programming has it set to 78 deg. As I said, I can live with the manual mode as long as I am comfortable that I will not have a runaway tstat. Any comments would be appreciated.
