Install dimmer without a load as a secondary switch

I have an extra set of 2477D’s that I am thinking of installing in a box to set up just as extra controllers for existing lights, any downsides or safety issues with not having these switches hooked up to a load? Haven’t seen or read anywhere that states it’s required to have a load on the switch.

    * so the load “red” wires will just be wire nut capped off in the box and not connected to anything…

Yes that can be done and many have used them that way.
Just cap off the Red Load wire. The full manual for the 2477D and other modules you have. Should be a big help.
Then link the switch to the loads you want to control. Using a HUB or ISY controller or manual linking with the set button.
Just remember you can manually link a controller to a Insteon module and it is Off. Then the 2477 would turn it off when the 2477D the scene was turned on.

As mentioned no issues at all. Perfect example is the load being capped off in multi Way setups

There are no problems, as previously mentioned. It is possible to connect a controller to an Insteon module manually; currently, the module is in the Off state.
