    Very new to Insteon

Just bought home with insteon. I have four 2486D controllers installed at each door. Pulled one out of wall box and noted that black is to power and red is to load. Disconnected switch and wire nutted line/load and one light comes on. Yet ON button turns on five lights. How do the controllers "talk" to each other?

It sounds like the On/Off main button set is linked to all the other modules connected to the other lights going on.
Is there any Insteon controller in the setup? Like a HUB or ISY994i? They should be able to set and remove links.
Here is a link to the 2486D full users manual. It may help you in the proper unlinking sequence if their is no controller and you want to change the setup.. You may also want to see what the other buttons do.

I can only find four 2486Ds. What does a HUB or IS994i look like. Can you post a link to a picture. I can crawl around under the house.

Can a 2486D "talk" to another 2486D? Two of them are within 8 feet of each other. Very small home.

Yes they can control each other if you link them together. The manual will give you instructions on how to cross link them together so both follow each other or use the buttons to control other Insteon Modules. I would try the buttons and see if anything goes On and Off. As there are plug in modules, modules you put inside the fixture and Insteon Outlets.

If you had a HUB or ISY it would be noticeable. Both have a network connection and usually sit on a flat surface like a table.

Tried to post some links to the ISY994i and HUB. Message said unapproved so I didn't leave it posted.

You can Google isy994 and insteon hub. You'll see pictures of them that way. Being that those are older switches, you may not have a hub at all
