Sensing when ceiling fan is on

I have a ceiling fan in my outdoor patio; it's controlled by a wall switch that came with the unit. I want to continue using that switch because the fan has 6 speeds and is reversible (can't do that with a fanlinc). However, when the fan is on, I don't want my recessed ceiling lights to come on (scheduled through my ISY994i) because the running fan causes irritating flickering shadows. How can I let the ISY controller "know" that the fan is on? I've thought of using a motion sensor to read fan blade movement, but is there something more "elegant" than this? Thanks.

The motion sensor might work depending on placement.

If there is some sort of fan output you could use the yellow sense wire on a micro module to pick up the fan being engaged and reference that in your recessed lights schedule.

Letting the community know the fan make/model might also help.

I would go with the micro module as Sean mentioned as it would be more elegant (hidden) and last longer. Using a motion sensor would probably be the last resort unless you can hardwire it due to battery drain.
