Is it possible to control the load attached to a keypad with one of its scene buttons? If so, how is it done manually? Can the set button be used as both the controller and the responder in the same "transaction" ?

It possible. You just need to link the Controlling button to the Main button two times. Once with both buttons On and again with both buttons Off.
Tap the Main button so its On
Tap the scene button so its On
Press the set button for 3 seconds so the scene button starts blinking
Then press and hold the Main button down for 10 seconds.
Tap the Main so its Off
Tap the scene button so its Off
Press and hold the set button for three seconds
Press and hold the Main button for 10 seconds.
