    Fan on when in AC

Our 2-story, single zone house gets warm upstairs during the summer and running the fan continuously seems to be a good solution. Adding a zone would require completely redesigning the duct work. I'm wondering if there's a way to program an Insteon thermostat so that in heat or off, the fan would automatically switch to auto, but in AC the fan would automatically be set to always on?

You need an Insteon manager such as software or an ISY to accomplish that. (The Hub cannot.) BTW, depending on where the dam[ers are, you may need only modifying the existing ductwork in a few places for a 2nd zone.

I looked into it. Each second floor register has its own run to the main trunk in the basement. We need to replace the trunk line with 2 parallel trunks as second floor and first floor runs come off the trunk all along its length. Because of space and other building systems it would be a lot of work (read, very expensive.) The other option would be a damper on every run. It would cost us something like $800 just in dampers. I'd probably buy a small PLC to do the control if we ended up going that route.

Running the fan continuously for 3 months (and in reality we really don't do that) is a much cheaper option and as a bonus it seems to really help with dust.

Home automation software uses very little processor power. The least costly (reliable) computer will suffice. Most laptops will use less energy. The software will probably cost more than the computer
