    It might be too early to declare success, but I wanted to post the link to my other thread here for future googlers... The moral - check your furnace manual! Even if it has all the connections and wires it does not mean it will work!

        I had this same problem. I had to install a C-wire. I used 2 wires just like a transformer would have used and connected them to the power supply on my box by my heater which has all the zones in it. One of the two wires went in to C and the other went into RC. I reversed these two wires and now the thermostat works fine. The order of the c-wire installation was shorting out the thermostat.
