    Hub 2245-222 died after 2 years.

    My first Insteon hub 2245-222 died after 2 years last night. After seeing the ridiculous 2 day shipping prices from Smarthome, I ordered one from Amazon. I smelled something burnt in the hub so I opened it up. Sure enough it looks like a small capacitor burnt on the center of the board. The power supply in our house is very stable and this is the first device I have lost in maybe 5 years. Anyone else seen this happen ? I will post some pictures soon.

    Emails to tech support never get answered. I am going to cal them tomorrow. Since we are going on vacation, I really needed it in a couple of days.

      Can you offer a better picture and high light the component you believe is bad? The images you provided are less than stellar to identify where and what is bad on the board.

        Second picture. Take a look at the capacitor near the edge of the board. Left of the transformer and closer to the antenna sticking out of the board.
        Not too clear but it looks like the top is starting to swell up and maybe even starting to spit out electrolyte.

          Hard to tell but you may be right - from the viewers perspective it just looks to be a warped image. I'd need to see a close up of the component to be sure. I really hope this isn't an early sign of a capacitor failure issue that has plagued the 2413S PLM since product launch. I suspect all of us will know soon enough as many of the first batch of HUB II's are fast approaching the two year mark in the wild.

            I opened mine up.

            Mine have the same Fujicon brand capacitors in it. For the switching supply filters. That the base 2413S board uses.

            Vino
            If the capacitor is C4 {I think that was the one photo}. Marked 222J 450Volts. That would be a .0022uf 450 volt +-5%

              They are sending me a replacement hub. I will try to get the capacitor details asap.

                  OK. I have my replacement hub. Smarthome support did send me all the device ID's in an excel file (Is it 1999 again ?) and I setup all the devices again. I also have another one from Amazon which I setup with all the devices again from scratch because it came earlier than the one from Smarthome. Is it possible to duplicate the setup in my second hub and keep it as a backup - so that if the hub dies again, I can ask someone to with out the hub in my absence ? I don't mind entering all the device ID's again. The question is if a second hub can be setup as a duplicate and then disconnected - so I don't plan on using two hubs at the same time.

                    Thanks for the updated photos.
                    Looks like it was in the C4 area.

                      Turns out mine died after 3 years of service. Not sure what the warranty is but they took it back and replace it. (Waiting for new unit to arrive)
                      Here's a pic of the PCB. Very similar to Vino's...
                      What's interesting is how every solder point looks like it melted the PCB to some degree
                      Hub was plugged into a 4500 Joule surge protector so the failure definitely originated from within.

                        Mine just died last week. It's nice that Insteon is still performing repairs or replacements.
                        If you are upgrading from Insteon Hub (2242-222) to Insteon Hub (2245-222) or replacing your existing Insteon Hub, several steps are required to ensure that your Insteon network is optimally configured after your transition.

                          Mine just died today - burnt smell so will email hubfix@insteon.com - over the years this is my 2nd hub to die. The hard part is the migration to a new hub. I did find a tip that may help some to find all the Insteon Device ID's - go to connect.insteon.com (this page has never worked for me but it will list all your devices). Instead of favorties, click the home button at the bottom and choose all devices. Now in the page that loads, right click and view source. in the source code of the page are all of the insteon devices with their device ID's. (First will be a listing in array format of device ID's, scroll further down to find each device ID with the name a few rows below each ID. This is going to be helpful particularly for hard wired devices.

                          Not great, but some programmer might be able to create a widget or tool for us to extract the 6 char ID's and device names?? I'm going to hard reset all physical switches that I can. If you have an older PLM usb module you can use houselinc software to remove any remaining "dead" links to the old hub ID.

                          Sounds like the rev 2.xx hubs have fixed this issue of hubs going bad (mine is a rev 1.4 hub). Hope this one lasts.

                          Also another tip: Instead of making scenes to group devices in the insteon app (which is has never really worked that great esp with devices start communicating with "ghost" devices that no longer exist - just do that with the Amazon echo smarthome section and create groups in there! That way if a hub goes bad, you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

                          Example (ID's stricken out)

                          div id="34xxxx" class="devItem" >
                          <div class="btnDiv">
                          <div style="float:left"><img alt="" class="btnStatusImg" id="myDev" src="/images/icnStatusProgress.gif" /></div>
                          src="/Images/Blank.png" /></a> </div>
                          <div class="devName" style="text-align:center;height:50px"> xxxxxxxxxxx Light</div>
                          </div>
                          <div id="3cxxxx" class="devItem" >
                          <div class="btnDiv">
                          <div style="float:left"><img alt="" class="btnStatusImg" id="myDev" src="/images/icnStatusProgress.gif" /></div>
                          src="/Images/Blank.png" /></a> </div>
                          <div class="devName" style="text-align:center;height:50px"> xxxxxxxxxx Light</div>
                          </div>
                          <div id="27cxxx" class="devItem" >
                          <div class="btnDiv">
                          <div style="float:left"><img alt="" class="btnStatusImg" id="myDev" src="/images/icnStatusProgress.gif" /></div>
                          <div class="devName" style="text-align:center;height:50px">Water Fountain Front</div>

                            I had a v1.23 hub, bought in November or December 2015, died February 2018, so a little more than two years. Not sure why I didn't just throw it away, but it's been sitting next to the new hub since I replaced it. This thread got me curious, so I popped the old one open. The bottom of the PCB looks slightly burned, but not as bad as in Dudealicious' picture. The blackening around that one capacitor is exactly the same as shown in Vino's picture, though.

                            The short life span of the hub only irritated me about half as much as the process of setting up the new hub... It was nice of them to email me a list of device names and addresses, but... I have almost 50 devices, and it takes about a minute to educate the new hub about each new device. I got through about 10 and lost patience, so the new hub only controls outdoor lights and a couple of indoor lights. And of course all of my scenes are history, and schedules have to be re-created from scratch. But I can't be bothered to invest more time setting things up, knowing it will all have to be re-created every couple/few years as hardware either breaks or gets obsoleted.

                            I would not have installed all of those dimmers if I'd seen this coming.

                              Wanted to thank everyone for the great info,
                              mine is ver 1.0,
                              died last week, opened it up as it smelt burnt so looked online saw a private sale. Picked it up but before installing it googled and found these threads,.
                              emailed supoort and they are sending me a replacement

                              replaced c7 with larger cap, had to foldnit over to fit but works

                              does a way exist to transfer my account, or settings to the new device?
                              I saw people complaining that this wasnt possible when the old hub is dead. But is it possible to do this when the hub is working again?
                              as instructions online saying that you shoukd remove all your devices from the old hub. Or the devices will be searching for the old hub

                              thanks for any advice, or links
