can the internal plm firmware be updated remotely? or does the unit need to be shipped back to SH

No firmware can not be field updated.
Smarthome and Smartlabs also do not provide a firmware upgrade service.

Technically speaking any device can be shipped back to Smartlabs to be reflashed. This service was provided to those impacted by the famous ALL ON / ALL OFF bug.
This was facilitated by UDI via an internal contact at Smartlabs.

They did it for Smartenit for their EZIO8SA Kit upgrade offer. They sent the PLM back to Smartlabs for firmware flashing and they did the EZIO8SA module firmware.
Offer is now gone from their web offerings for upgrades.
