I have the "Insteon Central Controller Hub, Compatible with Alexa, 2245-222" and it keeps saying"Testing was unsuccessful" or needs an extender. It is less than 5 feet away.

It is the only switch on the light. They are incandescent bulbs, 3 - 5 watts. I live in Raleigh NC USA. -
If it is the 2474 two wire switch. It is also an Insteon RF only module. So you have to have an RF communication to it.
I would think the 2245-222 would be close enough if it is about 6 feet from the HUB.
Is it mounted in a metal or plastic electrical box? Metal boxes or any obstruction between the HUB and the switch. Can effect the RF signals. Especially since the FCC photos seem to show the 2474's antenna on the rear edge of the module.Comment
