Version to use in Hong Kong or mainland China

Hi so I understand there are different versions of some of the Insteon devices to support operating within different frequency bands in different countries. For example the Hub has 3 different models I'm aware of for the following 3 regions and frequency ranges.
    2242-522 AU/NZ 921.0 MHz
    2242-422 EUR 869.85 MHz
    2245-222 US 915 MHz

However what about places like in China (both mainland and Hong Kong)? Which one should I order? The items below are my Bill of Material but it looks like for almost all products, except the Micro Dimmer and Micro On / Off Switch, are only available for US RF frequency at 915MHz. If this is the case this means the EUR or AU/NZ Hubs can only operate the Micro Dimmer and Micro On / Off Switch?!

Another potential issue is the 6 button On / Off keypad is listed as only supporting 60Hz on the Smart Home online store but both 50/60 Hz on the Product page. Anyone knows which is the correct one? We operate at 50Hz here so it'd be a huge issue if it really only supports 60Hz.

The switches are 50/60 Hz. You should check to see what frequency is legal there and that will tell you which one to use. You do not want to mix frequencies.

Okay so I take it that it was a typo on the Smart Home online store page for listing the 2487S as 60Hz only.
In terms of knowing which frequency is permitted locally is there a table where we can see what frequency each country supports?
However even then it appears only 915MHz is available for pretty much anything other than the Micro Dimmer and Micro On / Off Switch.

        Hello Titusc,

I'm from Hong Kong & using several insteon devices for years. Here are my devices list -

        Initiation setup -
        2242-442 Control Hub (UK)
        2477D Single Light Dimmer (US)
        2443-422 Micro Switch (UK)
        75790WH IP Cam
        2633-442 Plug-in on/off Switch (UK)
2843-222 Open / Close Sensor (UK)
2342-432 4 Scene mini remote (EU)

Most of the devices are UK / EU lines as I also be confused their product specifications. Electricity support regulation of Hong Kong is following UK standard, hence I chose UK line mainly, but there is no wire-in dimmer in UK line & I've no way to do but use 2477D dimmers. They're working fine.

After launch of Amazon Echo, I've changed the 2242-442 Control Hub to 2245-222, which is an US line product, again I've not way out as there is no such product UK line, at the same time, I've added 2852-222 leak water sensors & now the list as follow -

        Amazon Echo Dot
        2245-222 Control Hub (US)
        2477D Single Light Dimmer (US)
        2443-422 Micro Switch (UK)
        75790WH IP Cam
        2633-442 Plug-in on/off Switch (UK)
2843-222 Open / Close Sensor (UK)
        2852-222 Leak Water Sensors (US)
2342-432 4 Scene mini remote (EU)

Again, confirmed they're all working pretty good & voice control enabled now ^^

For wired-in devices & control hub, you need to use the one which fit the electricity supply specification (220V 50/60Hz) of Hong Kong. Difference of UK / US insteon products is the RF frequency. Insteon devices using 869.85Mhz for UK / EU, & 915Mhz for US, & they're the same if communciated by powerline.

Thanks for the dual band settings, UK & US devices can work together technically. You need to check OFTA regulation on RF frequency available issue in Hong Kong.

        Hope can solve your question~

Okay it appears the US version which communicates over 915 MHz is not usable at Hong Kong because we have GSM900/1800 here for mobile where GSM900 extends just so conveniently up to 915MHz.

So with the wall switches being available only for US models it appears Insteon is completely out of the question. That's a big ouch considering I need the switches in 2 weeks time for an in flight project.

Ben thanks for the info. Didn't realize you posted this before I posted my message above about conflict between the 915MHz US version with the local GSM phones. I'm actually surprised that it works for you. Is there a way to actually switch off the RF communication and elect to use power line communication only?

Hello Ttiusc, I've posted such question at this forum before, for asking results of ppls here before the experiment, after I got the reply "no idea, & can try" by Official Insteon Support.

900Mhz be using as 2G/3G carriers in Hong Kong & checked Insteon RF signal output is -103dBm, which just same or a little bit lower than FCC Wifi devices.

Fellows here told me RF signal can be stopped & just work by PLM for wired-in Insteon devices. However I fail to find it upto now. Maybe can ask official support for help on this point.

Only a couple of devices support turning off of and so far that's limited to plug in modules. The hub does not support that capability. As far as I know, only the ISY has the ability to turn off the RF

Only a couple of Insteon devices have that capability. If the device doesn't offer that choice, then even the ISY can't do it.

Sure but this is a problem at the same time as it severely limits where the products can be sold. Insteon's dual band is meant to be an advantage but the fact that it can't disable the RF and rely only on AC comms means either customized versions need to be made per region or less people can buy it and use it properly.

Benny you mentioned you are using the US 2245-222. I just realized that only the UK and EUR versions support 100 - 240V 50/60Hz. The US version only supports 120V 60Hz. Are you using a step down transformer?
                      It's stated on p30 of http://cache-m2.smarthome.com/manual...-en-060316.pdf
125 Volts AC, 50/60 Hertz, single phase

If we look at the older 2242's manual, on p25 of http://cache-m2.smarthome.com/manuals/2242-x22.pdf it's stated 100VAC to 240VAC and 50/60Hz auto detected at power-up.

So looks like US model of 2242 supports 100 - 240V 50/60Hz but has since been limited to 125 Volts AC, 50/60 Hz on the newer 2245.

The manual for the 2245-222 I downloaded, says 120-277 volts 50/60 cycles. It is not the latest one you linked to.

They may have changed things in later shipping units or want to discourage over seas sales. By not specifying the wider power specifications. As the Insteon RF is the US 915 MHz.

Using a 220 Volt to 120 Volt step down transformer. Would almost guarantee the Insteon power line commands would be lost. They do not do well through a transformer.

Hi all, I recently decided to gamble and I ordered a 2245-222 unit from amazon.com and I can confirm that, despite the 120v specification on the unit, it works perfectly here in France at 240V.
I also opened it and noticed a 240V printed on the board, it gave me the courage to plug it ;-)
So, it's clearly a will to discourage buyers from outside the US

No not to discourage use in other parts of the world.
It has a universal power supply so running it will work. On your power source.
The 2245-222 USA HUB uses the WRONG Insteon RF frequency allowed in France.
US is 915 MHz. European are 869.850MHz.
So European Insteon RF devices will not work with a 2245-222 US HUB.
It also may not have the correct local safety and electrical certifications needed in France.
